National Rally To Raise the Minimum Wage
Hundreds of Low Wage Workers Will March in Downtown Houston Demanding an Increase in Minimum Wage.

HOUSTON- July 24th will mark three years since the minimum wage was increased to $7.25 per hour. Low-wage community members representing the fast food industry and employees of companies owned by Bain Capital will join hundreds of local janitors to march through the heart of the financial district during rush hour. The speak out with low wage workers starts at 5:30PM and the march begins at 6:00PM.
The protesters will call on wealthy corporations like JPMorgan Chase and elected officials to stop blocking legislation that will raise the minimum wage to $10 per hour. Congressman George Miller plans to introduce legislation to raise the federal minimum wage later this summer. Texas Congressional Delegation members Al Green (TX-09) and Eddie Bernice Johnson (TX-30) are current co-signers of the legislation, along with 73 other members of Congress.
The current rate is decades out of date and its purchasing power has diminished over time by 30% for low-wage workers. However, wealthy corporations continue to produce millions in profits. Contrary to stereotypes, the overwhelming majority of low-wage workers are adults, not teens. In a recent report released by the National Employment Law Project a great deal of low-wage workers are employed by large corporation like the Fortune 500 housed on Louisiana Street.
Expect over 500 outraged Houstonians fed up with working to make ends meet.
